MOM ‘did not advise’ employer to fire migrant worker harassed by loan sharks; he can remain in Singapore amid police probe

A migrant worker was fired after his employer was harassed by loansharks for his alleged loans, according to the MOM and the police in a statement released on Saturday ( Apr 6 ).

Sharif Md Uddin, a Bangladeshi worker, has been permitted to remain in Singapore while investigations are pending, and they made the claim on social media that his employers have ordered his work to be terminated on the tips of the government.

On Wednesday, migrant worker activist groups ‘ social media accounts posted a picture of him telling a story about what has transpired over the past two decades. Therefore, a petition to stop Mr. Sharif’s deportation was created online.

According to Mr. Sharif, the problem began when an unidentified individual claimed to have borrowed funds, along with a copy of his work force and paper money from jo.

The 46-year-old, who has gained notoriety for his reading and for raising awareness about the plight of immigrant personnel during his last 16 years here, denied ever borrowing money.

He said that his company, Hiap Seng Piling Construction, subsequently raised the issue to government, while he differently made a police statement about the abuse.

But, on March 11, Mr. Sharif claimed that his company gave him a notice of cancellation informing them that MOM and the officers had advised them to send him back to Bangladesh.

The company stated in the termination letter seen by TODAY that it “undertook to terminate Mr. Sharif’s employment [under police and MOM officer advice] because of the troublesome bring along from your loan shark issue for us ( sic )”.

The letter added that Mr. Sharif could look for a new job, but that the company would arrange for his repatriation if he did n’t.

Mr. Sharif claimed that despite his efforts to find a new company, the new employer even experienced harassment, so it decided not to use him.

Additionally, TODAY obtained a copy of an internet Mr. Sharif sent to MOM asking for clarification on his condition, including whether the authorities had actually advised him to leave and whether they were concerned that details about his new job had been “leaked” since no one else had access to it.

GENERAL ADVICE GIVEN TO EMPLOYER’S Home” OUT OF CONCERN”: MOM, POLICE

The Geylang Neighbourhood Police Centre on March 9 requested guidance from the company’s girl after receiving debtor’s papers and heaven notes addressed to Mr. Sharif at her house, according to the government ‘ combined statement on Saturday.

The on-duty official said that the officers would step up patrols around her house and warn her condominium’s protection in light of her concerns about the ongoing abuse at her home from mysterious parties and the potential risks to her family’s safety, according to the statement.

Out of concern for her family’s and her well-being, the officer also provided general counsel to her that harassment would typically end once the employee’s employment agreement had been terminated and the employee no longer worked for the employer.

A representative from Hiap Seng Piling reached out to MOM on March 11 with” a general query” regarding the cancellation of a work permit if the employer is harassed because the worker is alleged to have engaged in unlicensed money lending activities.

The caller’s representatives claimed that neither Mr. Sharif nor specifics of the case were given.

MOM did not advise the employer to terminate Mr Sharif’s employment, the statement added.

” MOM informed the employer that if the business wanted to revoke a work permit, it had to inform the employee, pay outstanding wages, and bear the costs of repatriation.”

The authorities claimed that Hiap Seng Piling also served a termination notice to Mr. Sharif on the same day and that he had also filed a police report about the harassment he had endured.

The police informed the daughter of Mr. Sharif’s employer of this and suggested that he had not borrowed from unlicensed moneylenders, according to the statement.

According to the authorities, the harassment case is still being investigated by the police.

” MOM and SPF have reached out to Mr Sharif to address his concerns and offer our assistance”, said the statement.

CONCERNED THAT HARASSMENT WILL CONTINUE: MR SHARIF

Mr. Sharif stated TODAY that he was pleased that his concerns are being taken seriously and that MOM officers visited his dormitory on Friday to give him an update on the situation.

He claimed he is unsure about where he will stay or how he will provide for his basic needs while he is still receiving a Special Pass to help with investigations.

After the case is resolved, I will need an extension of my Special Pass until I find a permanent job, he said, and I’m anxious for MOM to reassure me that this will be provided.” It will be difficult for me to survive without any support during this time,” he said.

If he relocates, Mr. Sharif added that he worries that the harassment will continue and hopes the authorities will be able to reassure potential employers that it is” safe to employ ( him )”.
