MFP demands action on call centre gangs

The government was accused yesterday of breaking its pledge to stop call center gangs operating on the other side of the Thai-Myanmar border, a growing threat to Thailand and other nations, by the opposition Move Forward Party ( MPP ).

The common call center schemes, according to Rangsiman Rome, an MFP list-member, led to rumors that the government may be turning a blind eye to the issue because a partnership group has close ties to some powerful images connected to games in Myanmar, which are also connected to telephone center groups.

During the House of Representatives general debate against the government, Mr. Rangsiman claimed,” It has even added to the fact that the government is lacking in work efficiency.

He claimed that in the country in 2020, more than 1.7 million scam calls were made. In 2022, that number increased by tenfold to 17 million. The scams caused at least 40 billion baht worth of damage, which is more than the budget of some ministries, he said.

Myanmar’s Myawaddy township, just north of the Thai border town of Mae Sot, is known as a criminal hub for online gambling, scamming and trafficking, Mr Rangsiman said. At least 17 of Myawaddy’s casinos have Thai business partners.

Myawaddy Complex, for one, is owned by a former police major general who has a close connection with the government, he said.

He claimed that a former police sub-lteenant owned the Eastern Complex casino, while a former undercover officer owned the other casino, Sky Complex.

One more casino is owned by a former permanent secretary for defence, according to Mr Rangsiman.

” Are these people an obstacle to the]Thai] government in dealing with Myawaddy”? he asked.

He questioned whether the government has ignored its legal obligations as a result of its fear that serious investigations into the connection between high-ranking officials and the criminal network.

” We]Thailand ] still allow internet connections and mobile phone signals to be used to support these criminal operations ]on the other side of the border], and we have n’t taken any serious action to stop it”, he said.

He suggested that the government should work with China and the Myanmar junta to reach a deal-making strategy to stop the gangs.
