A 13 million baht LCD display initiative has resulted in the arrest of the mayor of a city in Samut Prakan province’s Bang Phli district on charges of demanding and accepting bribes.

The Muang Bang Kaew municipality’s president, Nathapong Taengsuwan, was detained on Thursday during a pang that was carried out at his company on Bua Nakarin Road in the town of tambon Bang.

The operation included representatives from the Office of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission ( PACC ) as well as police officers from a division of anti-corruption ( ACD ).

The ACD captain, Pol Maj Gen Jaroonkiat Pankaew, claimed that a limited partnership had complained to his office that Mr. Nathapong had demanded payment in exchange for the company being hired to carry out the 13 million baht LCD screen project.

The bribe, which represented 25 % of the cost, was to be paid in two installments — one on Thursday and the other after the project was finished.

Mr. Nathapong accepted an envelope from the company on Thursday that contained 1.56 million baht in cash at his business.

Mr. Nathapong immediately made his way from his business to the parking lot and threw the envelope away when he sensed something was wrong. The police arrived to make the stop at that time.

Mr. Nathapong was accused of deceitfully demanding and accepting a reward. He refuted the accusation.

For more legal action, he was turned over to the ACD.
