The army chief in southern Thailand has condemned the militants responsible for the brutal killing of four persons, including a 76-year-old blind woman and a nine-year-old woman, in Narathiwat province’s Tak Bai and Chanae regions.

Lt. Gen. Paisan Nusang, the head of the Fourth Army Place, announced on Saturday that he had ordered an intensive manhunt to find the “inhumane” killers.

Following two fatal killing incidents that occurred on Friday in the two towns, Lt Gen Paisan made a visit to Narathiwat.

Four Thai Buddhist civilians were killed and three others were hurt in the problems.

Lt. Gen Paisan convened a meeting at Ai Bue Tae community in Phon Chang Phueak of Chanae to comfort the area and offer condolences to residents and security personnel, primarily Thai Monks.

He called for increased surveillance, particularly for vulnerable groups that might be the target of adversaries, and said the attacks were “inhumane and barbaric,” noting that the attackers had attacked defenseless civilians.

Gunmen opened fire on a mother and son who were riding a bike in Ai Bue Tae on Friday afternoon.

The 76-year-old deaf woman’s mother was immediately killed, while her 50-year-old child suffered serious injuries.

Six armed men on three riders later attacked a home in Tak Bai, tambon Khosit, and fired several shells at it.

Three people were killed and two were hurt, including a nine-year-old woman.

Specialists believe that separatist parties carried out the attacks.

Safety forces may be ordered to shut off escape routes and strengthen security, and additional investigations may be conducted.

Lt. Gen. Paisan expressed his opinion that the attacks were a response to the new proactive steps taken by authorities to detain suspects connected to southern insurgent groups.

Violence usually rages against the southern regions of Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala, where secessionists seek greater independence for the region’s predominately Sunni population. Since 2004, when the rebellion resumed after a long absence, more than 7, 000 people have died.

But, problems on armed civilians in residential areas are still a common occurrence, with most involving security personnel.

Since the court in Bangkok rejected the long-delayed Tak Bai case brought by survivors ‘ people against seven state leaders when the statute of limitations expired, tensions have increased in the past year.

The event occurred in 2004 when security forces shot into a group of demonstrators outside a police station in Tak Bai, Narathiwat, killing seven people. After being arrested, 78 people suffocated to death in the backseat of military vehicles. No one has ever been tried for murder.
