The High Court sentenced a married father-of-three to 13 years and eight months in jail on Thursday ( Mar 27 ), more than the prosecution and defense had requested.  ,
On the day of Jun 21, 2021, Ong Eng Siew, 64, attacked and stabbed Mr. Ku Teck Eng, next 52, at the space deck of a Choa Chu Kang enclosure wall with a weapon.  ,
The assault came to an end as he began to act aggressively toward his former partner, a 42-year-old girl, whom he had abused and harassed in the weeks leading up to the event.  ,
Justice Mavis Chionh stated in her comment on the case that the injury suffered by Ong’s attempted murder was” serious and significant,” with the wounds being “extremely serious,” actually if Mr. Ku did not appear to have suffered long-term accidents.  ,
The prosecutor also addressed a significant issue between the prosecution and the defense in her determination, which was whether Ong’s adjustment disorder caused him to act in any particular way.  ,
In a previous hear, Ong admitted guilt to one count of attempted murder and deliberately inflicting hurt, with three counts of obstructing justice by throwing away the knife, two of which were referred for sentencing.
Ong, who is being represented by attorneys Eugene Thuraisingam and Ng Yuan Siang, claimed that his modification illness was a significant factor even though he acknowledged the crimes.  ,
The situation then moved on to an auxiliary reading where both sides produced psychiatrists who gave evidence as to the effect of Ong’s emotional condition.
Ong’s brother passed away in April 2021, his connection with his partner ended, and his employer refused to pay his salary, according to the defense’s psychiatrist.
The trial disagreed, arguing that Ong’s actions were motivated by resentment, frustration, and a lack of restriction brought on by alcohol consumption.  ,
Justice Chionh said in her opinion that she preferred the defense therapist’s examination because he believed his research to become “more eloquent and coherent.” She accepted that Ong’s mental illness and the crimes had a significant role in the relationship.
Even so, she weighed Ong’s psychological condition in a subpar manner because he still had the ability to assess his effects and have an understanding of his actions. She discovered that Ong’s adjusting disorder was a dysfunctional response to real stressors in his life and was momentary, situational, and was.  ,
His state couldn’t get a , “licence” to hurt others, the judge ruled.  ,
She even considered how Ong’s assault had been “vicious and unyielding” even after Mr. Ku had fallen, and his drunkenness.  ,
Justice Chionh incorporated Ong’s show of remorse in mitigation, citing his willingness to pay Mr. Ku S$ 2, 000 ( US$ 1, 500 ) and the absence of violent behavior in his previous behavior.  ,
Justice Chionh argued in her decision that the defense’s and the prosecution’s proposed phrases may be “wholly insufficient” to account for the accused’s “overall crime”  ,
The trial had requested a prison sentence of between 10 years, 8 months, and 12 years, 10 weeks.  ,
The defense pleaded with the judge to sentence their clientele to a sentence of between seven and eight times.  ,
