Man charged with setting curtains on fire at Changi Airport, remanded at IMH

A 33-year-old man was charged with setting fire to curtain blinds in a room at Changi Airport on Friday ( Dec 13 ).

Korkmaz Hasan, an American, faces one fee of committing evil by fire in the room at Changi Airport Terminal 2 at about 2.20am on Thursday.

His actions allegedly caused damage amounting to about S$ 1, 000 ( US$ 740 ), according to the charge sheet.

He may be taken into care at the Institute of Mental Health for a medical evaluation on December 27 and will be back in court.

After being denied a cigar, Korkmaz allegedly verbally abused supplementary police officers, according to the police.

Before the officers arrived, he allegedly took the veil blinds out of the waiting room and lit them with his light.

According to police, he even threatened to distribute the embers if his need wasn’t met.

Soldiers from the Airport Police Division later extinguished the flames.

During the fight, the person even sprayed a hearth hose at the officers, police added.

According to the officers, Korkmaz’s case is undergoing further judicial investigation.

He faces a maximum sentence of seven years in prison and a fine.
