Malaysian police launch probe on PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang over comments on Pedra Branca issue

Mahathir Mohamad was given a fugitive investigation on December 5 by the Malaysian Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) over his decision to abandon says over Pedra Branca and South Ledge in the Singapore Strait during his second term as prime minister. &nbsp,

The RCI is a fact-finding figure that was set up by the king on Cabinet recommendations. It looks into matters of” extensive public value” and discussion. These include the actions of government officials, public assistance organizations, or any other problem involving public welfare.

When Mahathir took office, when Malaysia dropped its challenge to a 2008 ICJ decision that Singapore had sovereignty over the Pedra Branca island, prime minister Anwar Ibrahim had in January demanded a review of the government’s selection. &nbsp,

In 2017, Malaysia had sought to have the decision overturned, while also seeking explanation from the Judge on the reputation of another archipelago, South Ledge.

Pedra Branca is a topic that dates back to 1979, when Malaysia published a chart that indicated the area was within Malaysia’s territorial waters. On 44 kilometers south of mainland Singapore, Pedra Branca is situated close to the eastern entrance of the Singapore Strait.

The ICJ decided in 2008 that Middle Rocks belongs to Malaysia and Pedra Branca belongs to Singapore. Additionally, it established that South Ledge is a property of the condition in which state’s regional waters are located.

In a report released earlier this month, the RCI recommended that the 99-year-old Mahathir been questioned for lying and causing false accusations in response to the dropped claims, citing his obligations as prime minister to safeguard and protect Malaysia’s interests and independence. &nbsp,

Responding to the review, Mahathir said that the decision was certainly made formally. He claimed it was a group decision in the 2018 Cabinet that even involved former deputy prime minister Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Deputy Prime Minister Anthony Loke, Deputy Prime Minister Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.

In Anwar’s unity government, Loke is the country’s current transport secretary, while Mohamad Sabu is the country’s minister of agriculture and food safety. &nbsp,

The group claimed, however, that they were never asked about the decision, and that Malaysia’s decision to withdraw the application was made public on May 23, 2018, just before the first Cabinet meeting.

Prior to now, Mahathir thought that the proposal for a criminal investigation was a move to tarnish his reputation.
