Malaysian court to deliver verdict in corruption trial of former first lady Rosmah

KUALA LUMPUR: Rosmah Mansor, the wife of former prime minister Najib Razak, will hear on Thurs (Sep 1) whether a court has found her doing seeking bribes from firms coveting govt contracts, just times after her husband was jailed for data corruption .

Najib and his spouse, who has faced critique for her lavish life-style, are at the centre of a wide-ranging attack on corruption mounted after his administration was voted out there in a historic 2018 election.

Last week, Najib began offering a 12-year prison sentence after Malaysia’s top court upheld his conviction in the case linked to the multibillion-dollar graft scandal at state fund 1Malaysia Advancement Berhad (1MDB). This individual remains on demo in four additional corruption cases.

Rosmah, 70, provides pleaded not guilty in order to three charges of soliciting and receiving bribes between 2016 and 2017 to help a company secure an US$279 million solar power supply project from the federal government when her husband was in power.

Prosecutors say Rosmah sought an incentivise of RM187. five million (US$41. eighty million), and obtained RM6. 5 mil from an official from the company that received the project.

The charges bring penalties of up to two decades in prison plus a fine of a minimum of five times the total amount, though Rosmah can seek a stay on sentencing by the Kuala Lumpur High Courtroom pending appeals to higher courts.

Rosmah has argued that she was framed by her previous aide as well as a number of government and organization officials involved in the task.
