PUTRAJAYA: Malaysian star chef , Datuk Redzuawan Ismail, also known as Chef Wan, was ordered to , give RM150, 000 ( US$ 31, 800 ) in damages to his former British son- in- rules over disparaging social media posts.
The Malaysian Court of Appeal on Thursday ( Jun 20 ) overturned a High Court’s decision earlier in 2023 that alleged , claims made by the restaurant were not derogatory of former child- in- law Gavin Edward O’Luanaigh.
Chef Wan was ordered to pay , RM150, 000 in public, aggravated and excellent problems to O’Luanaigh, and RM40, 000 in costs for trials in the High Court and Court of Appeal.
O’Luanaigh, whose Muslim brand is Salahudin Ghaffar, was married to Chef Wan’s artist child, Serina Redzuawan, in 2010 before their marriage in August 2017.
He brought a lawsuit in February of this year, claiming Chef Wan’s eight social media posts were derogatory toward his and his current partner.  ,
Chef Wan asserted in his speech of defense that the statements made in the postings were fact-based and made with malicious intent in his declaration of defense at the time.
The Shah Alam High Court partially granted O’Luanaigh’s request for an order on May 11, 2023, preventing Chef Wan from making any libellous and false claims against him.  ,
The celebrity chef was also , ordered to , eliminate all eight messages on social media which were reportedly disparaging.  ,
The judge finally determined that the claims were not made with malicious intent and were not disparaging of O’Luanaigh.
On Thursday, Chef Wan received a , eternal injunction barring the restaurateur from making disparaging remarks about O’Luanaigh.  ,
Additionally, he will be required to pay a 5 % annual interest rate from the time of the summons ‘ filing, the writ of summons, and the judgment sum’s final settlement.
