The deadline for Dr. Mahathir’s two children to make the pronouncements is later this month.
While Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration’s anti-graft assault on high-profile individuals has attracted a lot of media attention, MACC officials and attorneys cautioned that organization corruption charges are unlikely to be filed anytime soon.
” There will be a lot of to ing and fro ing in cases like this,” said one lawyer involved in the ongoing anti-graft crackdown, who declined to be identified.” It is a lengthy and cumbersome process for both the accused and the ( MACC ) investigators.
The continued anti-graft strategy is expected to splutter the public’s interest and lift the lid on the contentious business bailouts carried out during the regional economic crisis in the late 1990s, which had caused severe conflict between Dr. Mahathir and Mr. Anwar, who at the period was his No. 2.
Mr. Anwar, who was the government’s finance minister at the time, favored a more free-market approach to deal with the government’s economic woes and advocated a plan of high interest rates to bring international funds to prop up the Malay currency, the ringgit, which had quickly fallen in value.  ,
However, high interest rates slowed down economic activity and, more important, put a direct risk to Dr. Mahathir’s economic unit as a result of how difficult it was for the well-connected political business groups to pay their debts and finance big-ticket infrastructure projects.  ,
The first of a number of contentious commercial agreements that sowed the seeds for the Mahathir- Anwar plan face-off that eventually morphed into a full-blown social conflict that still rages today was the loan by state oil company Petronas of Mr. Mirzan’s Konsortium Perkapalan.
SOURCE OF FRICTION
Dr. Mahathir alleged that the continuous MACC investigation, which stems from revelations in the Pandora Papers, was careful while posting on social media in recent months. The Pandora Papers are documents that were leaked that revealed world leaders ‘ wealth and other powerful individuals ‘ offshore tax have ns.
He listed a number of other people in the leaked records, including Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who were cited in the papers but are not the subject of any public scrutiny.
Instead, Mirzan ( Mirzan ) was threatened that he would be imprisoned for five years if he does not take any actions that the prosecution deems to be contrary to the allegations made against him. In a post on X, previously known as Twitter, Dr. Mahathir said,” There was no mention that he will be brought to court.”
Mr. Anwar has accused his former manager of enriching his home and close business partners by awarding them attractive government contracts, accusing him of being sued by Dr. Mahathir for libel.
Despite his objections to the offer, the premiership has insisted in his responses to the libel suit that Dr. Mahathir had abused his status as leading to order Petronas to acquire Mr. Mirzan’s delivery assets.  ,
