The Rural Doctor Society have expressed concern after the number of Covid-19 vaccines given to children aged six months to four years old proved below expectation.
On its Facebook, the RDS said only 6,004 children have received the vaccine since the campaign kicked off about two weeks ago and it’s unlikely that the vaccination programme will meet its target.
The Ministry of Public Health launched a campaign last month to give the Covid-19 vaccine to at least two million toddlers aged six months to four years old by the end of the year.
According to RDS, with the Covid-19 situation easing, parents may be reluctant to get their children vaccinated although the medical community still perceives the vaccine as the best precaution.
Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said precautions must be stepped up against the spread of Covid-19 following the change of season.
He called on people to get booster shots and urged parents to have their young children vaccinated as well.
Mr Anutin said the rate of infections in this group during the spread of Omicron was three times higher than in other groups of children.
He said the vaccination programme for this group consists of three doses over a three-month period.
The first and second doses are administered one month apart, followed by the third dose two months later.
