LGBTQ+ advocacy should respect values of the Muslim community: MUIS

SINGAPORE: Any form of LGBTQ+ advocacy should respect the values that this Muslim community retains dear in practising its faith, said the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) in a mass media release on Monday (Aug 22).

“The Muslim community has the directly to preserve its religious and family beliefs especially when these are straight challenged or debated, ” said MUIS in its  assistance to the Muslim neighborhood on LGBTQ+ developments in Singapore.  

Prime Ressortchef (umgangssprachlich) Lee Hsien Loong announced in his National Time Rally speech on Weekend that the Government may repeal Section 377A   of the Penal Code,   revoking a colonial-era legislation that criminalises sex between men.

The Government will also modify the Constitution to guard the definition of marriage – currently recognized by law as happening between one man and one woman – from being challenged constitutionally in the courts, Mr Lee stated.

MUIS stated in its statement that Islamic law areas importance on individual dignity, respect and peaceful relations.  

“These ideals are crucial as we get around complex socio-religious issues today. As Muslims, we should treat everyone with full pride and respect. Everybody, regardless of their intimate orientations, must really feel safe in our modern society and institutions.

“As such, Muslims should uphold the best of character, charitable organisation and compassion, in working with others, even with who we disagree, ” it said, adding that it rejects any kind of form of bullying or harassment.

MUIS also said that the general public sphere must stay safe for the  mainstream and trust communities to educate users of their own communities in accordance with their belief systems and values.

“If our religious values and values are challenged openly and aggressively, this will inevitably transform the public space into one which is confrontational and divisive.  

“We must work towards avoiding any differences in alignment and worldview through turning into clashes plus conflicts which will deteriorate our society. inch

DEFINITION OF MARRIAGE

MUIS welcome efforts to improve the institution associated with marriage between man and female in Singapore.

This is in accordance with the teachings of Islam which  emphasises the building associated with families through marriage between males and females because the basic foundation associated with society. Islam also  forbids all other types of sexual relationships and unions.

“We have also called to the Government to consider our position as it deliberates on laws that are appropriate for Singapore in preserving and building up the institution of marriage, ” stated the council.

MUIS added that will some individuals within the Muslim community  may profess the Islamic belief but self-identify on matters of libido and gender consist of ways.   There have also been attempts to reinterpret religious texts to find a religious schedule for their  options.
