Jail for SIM student who repeatedly filmed girlfriend naked while she slept or showered

SINGAPORE: A 19-year-old frequently filmed reducing films of his roommate without her consent while she was drowsy or showering.

The 23-year-old man pleaded guilty to five voyeurism counts and a combined charge of distributing intimate images, and he was given a 20-month sentence on Thursday ( Dec 26 ).

Sentencing was based on five additional objectification counts.

The target and offender’s names are protected by gag orders. Throughout their relationship, from 2020 to 2022, all pornography occurred.

The man, who was at the time studying at the Singapore Institute of Management ( SIM), first shot his girlfriend on February 10, 2021 without her knowledge.

He used his phone to record two movies of himself touching her bare stomach while she was sleeping and lifted her clothing.

He allegedly filmed the prey without her knowledge during another affair two months later when he instructed her to wear an eye mask during intercourse.

He prevented her from doing so and continued filming when she attempted to remove the eye face at one place.

The person also repeatedly filmed his girlfriend while she was changing or taking a shower in her hostel.

He used his phone to record her taking a shower by filming it through a gap between the bathroom door’s best and the ceiling.

The next moment he caught her was on July 16, 2021, when the perpetrator filmed himself touching her breasts while she was sleeping on the couch.

However, when the sufferer woke up, she realized the camera’s camcorder was pointing her way.

When she asked why he was filming her, the&nbsp, male denied it and place his cellphone away. She accepted his term for it and left the situation alone.

AFTER BREAKING UP

The pair broke up in 2022 for reasons related to the crimes. But from July to August 2023, the man frequently sent her information on Instagram, asking to observe her neck.

The sufferer had previously blocked him on all of her email and social media accounts, but he kept creating new accounts for her to call her.

The guy threatened to send his pictures of the person to another after she ignored him.

Because she had not been aware of the sensual photos he had taken, the victim continued to ignore him. The victim’s attacker admitted to threatening her because he wanted her.

The crimes came to light this January, when the gentleman reached out to the murderer’s brother on Instagram.

The guy asked to view” hot pictures” of the victim’s friend’s girlfriend. The gentleman did not believe the nephew when he claimed he had none.

He sent two pictures of the sufferer, showing her bare neck and her mouth, to her nephew. The brother sent a second image of the sufferer wearing a bra when he ignored him.

The brother was advised to put the brother on Telegram if he wanted to discover naked photos of his own sister because they could send and receive photos of their own sisters that were missing on the app.

The defendant’s sibling had already been informed of the discussion, and she had instructed him to look into the nude photos her ex-boyfriend claimed to possess.

The nephew received two fading images of the target on Telegram, which were pictures from videos of her having intercourse with the guy and taking a shower.

The victim reported to the authorities that morning. More personal video of the sufferer were found in his cloud storage bill the day after the man was arrested while he was serving in the National Service.

The girl described how devastated she felt after learning that their marriage had been taped without her knowledge.

According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Ariel Tan,” Her pain stemmed from her fear that her life and career may be ruined if folks learned about her naked photos and videos.”

Out of fear that she would be intercepted again if she began undoing, the attorney added that the victim then checks any newly installed rooms with a hidden camera signal lighting.

In sentencing claims, Ms. Tan claimed that she also cries whenever she recalls what her ex-boyfriend did to her.

NOT FIT FOR Supervision

The gentleman was evaluated at the Institute of Mental Health and diagnosed with sensual condition, but this did not make the crimes any worse.

Ms. Tan remarked that the IMH document did not restrict the man’s capacity to exercise self-control and comprehend how wrongfully and wrongfully he was acting.

She asked for 22 to 25 times ‘ prison, arguing that the boy’s steps showed a higher level of malice and wickedness, &nbsp, and describing him as” a routine voyeur”.

The person has been capturing videos of his partner in ways that make it easier for him to fend off diagnosis. So, she said, his crimes were” carefully calculated acts” rather than” cannot be simply chalked up to a second of young folly.”

While the person was 19 during the pornography crimes, he was now 22 when he distributed the personal photos. This showed an increase of his judicial conduct, the attorney argued.

Thomas Tham, the defense attorney, asked the court to regard probation for his client, highlighting his youthful time during the pornography crimes.

The attorney claimed that the couple had a great relationship at the beginning and that he wanted to have a closer look at the woman. Their marriage “went poor” two years later, which” caused all these issues”, he added.

However, Deputy Principal District Judge Luke Tan made note of the pornography that occurred during the marriage, which made it possible for the person to get close to the sufferer and commit the crimes.

The judge alleged that the person abused the confidence his girlfriend had placed in him by making personal videos of her for his own sex gain.

When the person distributed the impacting images afterwards, this was an act of shame, especially as he knew he was sending them to the murderer’s own nephew, Judge Tan added.

” Whatever may be said about his age at the time of commission of the offences, she was even younger”, he said of the victim.

The judge took into account the victim’s vulnerability due to her younger age, her faith in her boyfriend, the serious harm she suffered, as described in her impact statement, and the serious and repeated nature of the crimes.

All this meant deterrence, and not rehabilitation, was the main sentencing consideration, and probation was not suitable for the offender, Judge Tan said.

Voyeurism is punishable by a sentence that can lead to up to two years in prison, as well as a fine, caning, or any combination of these penalties.

The maximum sentence for distributing intimate photos without permission is five years in prison, which could include a fine, a caning, or any combination of these penalties.

As the man’s charge of distributing intimate images was amalgamated, he could have faced up to double the penalties.
