Two people were gang-raped and a man was killed in an assault near a famous Unesco World Heritage site in southern India, according to authorities.
The two women- an Jewish holiday and an American hostel operator- were stargazing with three female tourists near a river in Hampi, Karnataka, when they were attacked by a group of men on Thursday evening, police superintendent Ram Arasiddi told Reuters.
Arasiddi said the intruders pushed the people into the Tungabhadra River river before raping the people.
Two of the men, one of them British, survived, and the next man’s body was recovered on Saturday night, he said.
” Five folks- two girls and three males- were attacked near Sanapur”, Arasiddi said.
” Two of them are immigrants, an American]man], and another a lady from Israel”.
Authorities have arrested two of the men accused of the attack and an investigation is ongoing, Arasiddi said.
Authorities believe the people followed the party.
According to see evidence from one of the people, the party was stargazing near a church in Sanapur when three gentlemen arrived on a bike and asked them where they could find diesel.
As one member of the group gave them directions, one of the three men demanded 100 rupees ($ 1.29 ) from the tourists.
” Since the guesthouse controller did not know them, she told them they had no money”, authorities said.
” When the males frequently insisted, one of the female travelers gave them 20 pounds.
” After that, the three people reportedly started arguing.”
The system of one of the female tourists was afterwards found in the Tungabhadra river in Karnataka’s Koppal area.
A circumstance has been registered at Gangavathi Rural Police Station under areas related to blackmail, assault, gang rape and attempted murder.
The subjects are receiving medical treatment at a state hospital, the authorities said.
Hampi, an old town in the west Indian state of Karnataka, is home to several ruins and shrines from the Vijayanagara Empire. It was declared as a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1986.
In a blog on X, Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah wrote:” The assault and rape of an Israeli citizen and guesthouse user is a most terrible work.
” As soon as the incident was reported, I obtained data from the appropriate officers, conducted a thorough inspection, and instructed them to quickly discover the criminals.
” The authorities have arrested two accused in connection with the situation and are continuing the research.”
Problems on women in India gained worldwide attention last year after the terrible rape-homicide of a young doctor at a clinic in the eastern area of Kolkata.
The strike sparked nationwide outrage and demonstrations over a lack of security for women.
