Is India changing its name to Bharat? G20 invite controversy explained

NEW DELHI: A dinner invitation from Indian President Droupadi Murmu, referring to herself as” President of Bharat,” has sparked rumors that the nation’s name may soon be changed.

WHAT IS THE TROUBLE OVER THE NAME OF INDIA?

By convention, the names India and Bharat are always mentioned in invites from American constitutional bodies when the text is in English and Hindi, respectively.

When Reuters questioned an official at the president’s company, they responded that they didn’t like to comment on the situation.

Critics reacted to the use of Bharat in the invites by claiming that the government was pushing for the title to be formally changed given the Hindu-nationalist philosophy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration and its drive for more English usage.

Modi’s nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party( BJP ) administration has been renaming towns and cities under colonial names in an effort to help India overcome what it has referred to as a” slavery mentality.”

The South Asian gigantic is known as India in English and as Bharat, Bharata, and Hindustan in other American languages.

The English translation of the constitution begins with the phrase” We, the people of India ,” and it continues in Part One,” India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States.”

With the exception of the section defining the government’s names, which states in Hindi,” Bharat, that is India, may be a Union of States ,” the organisation always refers to India as being in the form of bharata.

A constitutional amendment would be necessary to change India’s title to just Bharat, and it would need to be approved by a two-thirds majority in both houses of parliament.
