Indonesia to host discussions on Myanmar conflict: Diplomat

A senior Indonesian diplomat told AFP on Thursday ( October 3 ) that diplomatic discussions on Myanmar’s civil war would be held in Jakarta ahead of a regional summit coming up next week.

The deals on Friday and Saturday may involve staff from” Indonesia, ASEAN, the European Union and the United Nations” and people of anti-junta parties, said the minister, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Myanmar’s ruling government was never expected to take part, the minister said.

Just before the Association of Southeast Asian Nations ( ASEAN ) gathers in Laos for a summit on October 6 to October 11, is scheduled to discuss the bloody conflict that has been raging there since a 2021 coup.

The 10-member coalition’s plan will likely include the Myanmar conflict strongly.

ASEAN, of which Myanmar is a part, has led some political pushes to solve the problems but has made little progress.

Myanmar’s military officials have been barred from high-level ASEAN discussions.

The issue has divided the union at previous sessions, with Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines calling for tougher action against revolution officials.

Thailand has had its own diplomatic discussions with Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of democracy in detention, and with the generals.

The latest diplomatic push comes as Myanmar’s military reels from battlefield defeats to ethnic minority armed groups and pro-democracy” People’s Defence Forces” ( PDFs ) that rose up to oppose the military’s coup.

The United Nations reports that more than three million people have been displaced as a result of the war’s more than three times.
