Indonesia suspends eye-scanning Worldcoin crypto project

Indonesian authorities announced on Friday that they had suspended Worldcoin, the eyeball-scanning crypto job co-founded by OpenAI main Sam Altman, from international scrutiny.

Millions of people have had their iris patterns scanned to create a” World ID,” proving they are humans and allowing them to do trades since Worldcoin was launched in 2023.

The data is secure and encrypted, according to Worldcoin, but it has experienced issues with concerns about the use of specific information, particularly in countries like Hong Kong, Kenya, Spain, and Portugal.

A conversation and modern ministry official said Indonesia’s suspension came as a result of public reports of suspicious activity on the platform.

Alexander Sabar, the ministry’s director common for digital storage control, stated that” the melting is a precautionary measure to prevent potential risk to the public.

The government may even summon Worldcoin’s regional users, PT Terang Bulan Abadi and PT Sandina Abadi Nusantara, to give them more information about their actions, he said.

The initiative aims to address one of the biggest issues facing the blockchain industry, which rely mostly on pseudonyms to run its business and is vulnerable to scams and spam.

After discovering that it violated privacy laws, Hong Kong’s Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data ( CPPD ) issued a warning to the project in May.

Worldcoin was suspended in March 2024, according to Portugal’s data security authority, citing concerns over data security for adolescents. Days later, Spain’s data protection agency issued a similar order to the company to suspend its actions there.
