Indonesia presidential candidate Anies files court challenge to election result

Anies Baswedan, a losing candidate for Indonesia’s presidential election, filed a legal case in the constitutional court on Thursday ( Mar 21 ) to challenge the outcome of a majority vote won by Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto.

Previous governor of Jakarta Anies claimed the purpose of the case was to improve politics and that there were numerous issues that needed to be fixed.

Anies ‘ group alleges that the current administration had wrongfully sought to influence the battle, which regulators have rejected, and that his team refused to concede after the results were released on Wednesday.

Official results revealed that former special forces commander Prabowo Subianto, who was secretly supported by the wildly popular incumbent President Joko Widodo, won almost 60 % of the vote, followed by Anies with 25 % and former Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo with 16 %.

” The method and effect are both as important. When there is a difficult process, there will be difficult results”. Anies told a press conference.

” From the policy aspect, regulations, down to the execution ( of the election ) there were many problems and we want those corrected so they are not repeated”.

The Anies staff has complained about the common allocation of social support, such as wheat, fertiliser and money handouts, in key electoral areas, which they said influenced the vote. That has been rejected by the leadership.
