India’s Modi working to ‘win hearts’ in Kashmir after special status cut

On his first visit to the disputed region’s main city since its semi-autonomy was canceled in 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on Thursday ( Mar 7 ) that he was working to “win hearts” in Indian-administrated Kashmir.

The Muslim-majority territory was exempt from its particular legal status by Modi’s administration nearly five years ago, splitting the original state into two divisions that were directly related to New Delhi.

Many in the richly militarized region were offended by the move, which was widely accepted throughout India.

At a common protest in Srinagar, the Hindu nationalist head said,” I am working hard to win your emotions, and my attempt to keep winning your emotions will remain.”

Insurgents in the Himalayan area have been fighting for independence since 1989, calling for a fusion with Pakistan, which controls a smaller portion of the Kashmir area and, like India, asserts it in full.

At the march held in a facility with thousands of people present, Modi said,” Jammu and Kashmir is not just a area, it is the queen of the country.”

Modi was proud to have canceled the country’s legal special reputation and inherited property and employment protections for its permanent residents.

He claimed the potential of the area had been hampered by the old laws and “dynastic politicians.”

Before the Muslim holy month of fasting, which is scheduled to begin in the upcoming weeks, Modi said,” Today, from Kashmir I extend my handshake for the coming Ramadan to the whole land.”

Gates were established throughout Srinagar and thousands of military officers and military troops were deployed.

Modi also inaugurated a number of development initiatives and government initiatives to boost the agro-economy and commerce in Kashmir and different parts of India from a distance.
