India to monitor China’s mega Tibet dam plan

India stated on Friday ( Jan 3 ) that it was concerned about a planned mega hydropower dam’s construction upstream in Tibet and that it would “monitor and take necessary measures to protect our interests.

The bridge, if constructed, would dwarf the world’s first Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in central China, which has potential serious effects for millions of people inland in India and Bangladesh.

The initiative on the river Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet and Brahmaputra in India was linked to Beijing’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality and financial goals in the Tibet area, according to a statement from China’s top news agency, Xinhua.

China “has been urged to make sure that activities in inland areas do not harm the river state of the Brahmaputra,” according to India’s foreign ministry official Randhir Jaiswal on Friday.

Jaiswal assured investigators that New Delhi would continue to monitor and take the necessary steps to safeguard our objectives.

India has established rights to river waters and” consistently expressed… our views and concerns… over mega projects on rivers in their ( Chinese ) territory”, he added.

In the wake of the most recent report,” these have been reiterated along with the need for accountability and interviews with the river places.”
