TALKS TO FOLLOW AT NEUTRAL VENUE
In a post on X, Rubio commended Modi and Sharif on the deal, which he said included not only an immediate peace but also the launch of speaks on” a broad set of problems at a natural page”.
In a later address to the nation, Pakistan Prime Minister Mohammad Shehbaz Sharif said Trump “played a honest” part in promoting the peace.
He even said on X that Pakistan – which has longer sought foreign intervention in Kashmir- “appreciates” the US treatment.
India has regularly opposed intervention, yet, and watchers were wary of the peace.
” The peace was cobbled together hurriedly, and at a time when hostilities were at their highest,” US-based South Asia researcher Michael Kugelman wrote on X after the statements of violations.
” India appears to have interpreted the bargain differently than did the US and Pakistan, and it’s likely not good on the broader discussions it calls for. Upholding it may cause challenges,” he warned.
News of the peace was greeted with pleasure on both sides of the border and Pakistan’s aircraft jurisdiction said its aircraft had been entirely reopened.
India and Pakistan have been locked in a disagreement over Kashmir ever since they were born at the end of British colonial rule in 1947. Hindu-majority India and Muslim Pakistan both act piece of Kashmir but claim it in full.
They have gone to war three days, including half over Kashmir, alongside several smaller occurrences of fighting.
India blames Pakistan for an insurrection in its element of Kashmir that began in 1989 and has killed tens of thousands. It furthermore blames Pakistani Islamist radical groups for problems somewhere in India.
Pakistan rejects both expenses. It says it provides only social, political and diplomatic support to Kashmiri hardliners.
