India court extends detention of opposition leader Kejriwal until Apr 23: Report

NEW DELHI :  A Delhi judge extended Arvind Kejriwal’s confinement until April 15th, according to legitimate media website Live Law, a loss for the opposition, which needs him to campaign in the general elections that start this week.

The Chief Minister of Delhi’s national capital territory was detained on March 21 in a corruption case involving the city’s liquor policy, according to the Enforcement Directorate ( ED), India’s financial crime-fighting agency. Kejriwal had been held until April 15 when he was released from custody.

According to Kejriwal, his imprisonment is immoral. The Supreme Court of India requested the ED to listen to the issue in a separate reading on Monday, which will take place on April 29.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a vehement critic of him by Kejriwal, who also rejects the accusations made against him and another opposition figures as politically motivated.

Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) dispute the allegations and claim that law enforcement organizations operate independently.

In Delhi and the state of Punjab, where his ten-year-old Aam Aadmi Party ( AAP ) is headquartered, protests erupted following Kejriwal’s arrest. The United States and Germany both caught on to it as well.

Although his arrest has brought the 27-party opposition alliance called INDIA, which includes AAP and the Congress group, together, opinion polls indicate that BJP has a clear advantage over them and is likely to get a traditional second term.

On April 19, India will begin casting ballots in a seven-phase public election. Seats may be counted on Jun 4.
