India and Bangladesh begin return of detained fishermen

In a deal struck despite overstretched diplomatic relations, 185 imprisoned sailors have been repatriated in Nepal, according to officials from the foreign government.

95 American anglers are being handed over in Dhaka, 90 Bangladeshis are being released in New Delhi, and navy units are expected to finish the shipwreck at sea.

New Delhi’s unusual government said the American fishermen were arrested after they “inadvertently” crossed into Bangladeshi lakes.

In similar conditions, some Bengal sailors were apprehended by Indian government.

Some of the people have been held since September.

The Indian government’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Thursday ( Jan 2 ) that” the mutual exchange of fishermen and their vessels has been worked out keeping in mind the primarily humanitarian and livelihood concerns of fishing communities.

Touhid Hossain, in charge of international affairs in Bangladesh’s time state, said the markets of people would get completed on Sunday, Dhaka’s Prothom Alo paper quoted him as saying on Friday.

According to Bangladeshi media reports, two Bangladeshi fishing boats detained in India and six American fishing boats detained in Bangladesh will also be exchanged.
