BANGKOK: In desperate rescue attempts, survivors scrambled through the debris in Mandalay, Myanmar, using their bare hands, on Friday ( Mar 29 ), after a massive earthquake tore down buildings.  ,  ,  ,
A citizen and save workers in the second-largest city of Southeast Asia, who were unable to help them or with large equipment, told Reuters that they were struggling to rescue survivors who were yelling for help because the authorities were not there.
Htet Min Oo, 25, was unable to survive when a brick wall fell on him, entangling the majority of his brain. He claimed to have tried to remove the particles from a tower with his hands, but his mother and two uncles remained hidden beneath it.
He said,” There’s too much rubble, and no rescue teams have come for us,” shedding his tears.
Myanmar has experienced a crisis since 2021, when the military seized control of the country from an elected government, cruelly repressing protests and evoking an extraordinary military rebellion.
More than 1, 000 people have died in the country as a result of Friday’s earthquake, which was 7.7 scale and occurred at a vulnerable time for the nation, after four years of military principle and a civil war that have destroyed infrastructure and caused millions of people to flee.
Sheela Matthew, assistant state director for the World Food Programme, stated in a statement that” the powerful earthquake hit the country at the worst possible moment. ” Myanmar simply can’t afford another catastrophe.”
According to Mohammed Riyas, chairman for Myanmar for the International Rescue Committee, “people across the country are affected by widespread murder,” and the health system has “been devastated by issue, overwhelmed by epidemics of cholera and other conditions.”
Riyas continued,” The extra stress of meeting the needs of those who have been injured in the disaster is going to put assets under unprecedented stress.”
A coup spokesperson in Myanmar did not respond to requests for comment.
The horizontal civilian government that controls some pro-democracy forces, the National Unity Government’s foreign secretary, stated via mobile that it would send anti-junta troops to aid in crisis efforts.
