After discovering that his house address had been altered without his knowledge, Mr. Raymond Tan’s experience has been an emotional rollercoaster through 2025.
The Singaporean is one of 71 people , whose addresses were illegally altered by scammers via the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority’s ( ICA ) electronic service.
Since Jan 11th, elements of this e-service have been discontinued in order for ICA to implement additional safety procedures. Additionally, authorities have suspended the Singpass records of all the impacted individuals.
The information that Mr. Tan’s private information can be accessed and changed by phony actors in a state program has been unsettling for him, who is in his 40s.
The biggest surprise was the almost-closed-to-close personal bank accounts, despite the inconvenience caused by his Singpass profile suspension.
In an interview on Wednesday ( 12 February ), Mr. Tan stated,” It has not been a peaceful start to the new year.”
A Unsettling Finding
On December 30 when Mr. Tan was purchasing travel insurance at the airports, he realized something was wrong.
He noticed that his household address had been changed to an new Housing Board device in Commonwealth Drive while using MyInfo, a online service that automatically auto-fills types with government-stored information.
” I called Singpass quickly. They said they didn’t know what happened, but they gave me the opportunity to thaw my Singpass. Of course, I did that”, he recounted.
He consented to more security measures that required a video call in order to reinstate his Singpass account because he feared more unauthorised access would occur.
Also, even while on vacation, queries lingered in his mind.
” I was wondering if it meant that my account had been compromised, and if so, how much it has been compromised, and what else is impacted,” Mr. Tan said.
” I looked over everything else, including the history of my Singpass dealings and my bank apps, and they all seemed fine. So I thought, “maybe it’s really a problem and not something poor,” and then I thought.
However, his fears were confirmed on January 11 when ICA revealed that cybercriminals had hacked into vulnerabilities in its online tool to change personal addresses.  ,
Since then, Mr. Tan has received a fresh identity cards.  ,
While he understands the need for his Singpass account to be suspended during studies, the condition has caused some problems. Without Singpass, an id for a number of public and private digital services, he was unable to get the paperwork needed for his private helper’s six-monthly health examination.
He also could not continue with his nomination as a grantor in his father-in-law’s Enduring Power of Attorney. An LPA is a legal document that enables people to assign people to generate decisions on their behalf if they experience mental incapacity.
” Things like these are very time-sensitive, especially with my father-in-law’s developed time … But I was told by the officer-in-charge that there’s no online opportunity to do this without my Singpass”, said Mr Tan.
