How a Boys’ Town kid formed a bond with people with disabilities – with the help of ice cream

DEVELOPING DEEPER EMPATHY

The ice cream making studio was organised by security firm Certis as what it called a “beneficiary-for-beneficiary” program. This falls under the strong ‘s  Corporate social responsibility ( CSR ) initiatives to help people with disabilities and children with disabilities as well as those who are disadvantaged.

For the first time in its history, Certis organized an exercise that brought up two long-term companions in Kids ‘ Town and SPD.

Robin Goh, Certis ‘ senior vice president and head of group communications and marketing, said the Boys ‘ Town youths displayed a “natural willingness” to support the people with disabilities throughout the workshop.

” They stepped up to help with preparation, assisted scooter people with positioning, and ensured all felt included and engaged.

” Seeing the children take effort and make an inclusive, pleasurable environment was uplifting,” he said, adding that Certis will continue to explore related activities.

Kids ‘ Town students and Certis volunteers went to a learning period prior to the event to learn more about how to interact with people with disability.

The youths were really interested and wanted to understand the particular difficulties people with disabilities face in their everyday lives at work and social events, according to the youths during the session. Iris Koh, the director of the SPD day activity center.

” By the end of the session, there was a noticeable change in trust among the Boys ‘ Town children. They were more eager to put what they had learned into practice and felt more organized and empowered to speak with PWDs politely. “
