Thailand is the target of a task force headed by Hong Kong’s Security Bureau to investigate cases of people being smuggled into illegal work in Southeast Asian nations.
Hong Kong residents were alarmed by the incident involving mainland Chinese artist Wang Xing, who was just held captive in Myanmar after visiting Thailand.
According to the Security Bureau, law enforcement has received 28 requests for assistance for Hong Kong residents who have been claiming to get trapped and unable to keep since the second quarter of 2024. Thus far, 16 people have been returned to the city.
In the remaining 12 cases, people reported limitations to their freedom of movement but still managed to communicate with their people or the work force.
The work force was sent to Thailand on Sunday evening, the South China Morning Post reported.
Wang, also known as Xingxing, vanished on January 3 after arriving in Thailand and was thought to have been duped into hiring a false casting broker for a filming work.
Eventually, Thai authorities saved him from a fictitious website con operation in Myawaddy, a Myanmar city close to Tak province’s Mae Sot district. He was identified as a target of human smuggling, and he was returned to mainland China last Friday.
Eason Chan Yik-shun, a Hong Kong song, canceled his Bangkok concert on February 22 after his management alleged that the cancellation was “in response to recent safety concerns involving Foreign citizens and fans traveling to Thailand.”
