Cutting in the main cause of injuries at 32 %, state health officials

In Thailand, 2 090 people were injured in traffic incidents involving the New Year’s Day on December 27 to December 3. In the eight days that followed, 363 folks died and 2 090 were hurt.

According to the Road Safety Directing Center of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, 205 incidents occurred on Friday only, injuring 32 people and injuring 199 people.

From Dec 27 to Jan 3, there were 2, 149 incidents that claimed 363 life and wounded 2, 090 citizens, said Saharat Wongsakulvivat, the deputy chief of the office.

Cutting in was the major cause of accidents, at 32.2 %, followed by speeding, at 31.2 %, and poor visibility at 17.6 %. Riders made up 90 percent of the cars involved in injuries.

Surat Thani state recorded the highest number of accidents and injuries at 78 and 88, both. Bangkok had the highest number of deaths, at 21.

Four counties— Trang, Trat, Yala and Samut Songkhram — have recorded no incidents.

Authorities this year expanded the New Year’s Day road safety plan by ten times in an effort to spread awareness and encourage more responsible driving. The battle period runs from December 27 to January 5.

A year ago, a full of 284 people were killed and 2, 307 injured in 2, 288 incidents during the seven-days New Year holiday period.

In the first seven weeks of the latest 10-day battle, to Jan 2, a total of 321 people were reported killed and 1, 894 injured in 1, 938 traffic accidents.

The number of fatalities increased by 13 % over the same time last year.
