Higher fines, demerit points for speeding offences from Jan 1, 2026

Since 2020, there has been a “very important” increase in the number of highway injuries. While the amounts remain below pre-pandemic degrees,” the way they are going up is something that is of problem”, Mr Shanmugam said.

In 2024, there were about 7, 200 highway injuries, resulting in about 142 mortality. The number of speed-related deadly incidents rose by nearly 44 per cent from 2023 to 46 situations.

The number of speeding offenses reached 192, 000 circumstances, which is also the highest quantity in the last ten years.

The Transportation Police has stepped up its enforcement, including activating the rate police performance in red-light devices, but increased police “has never been enough”, Mr Shanmugam said.

Protection is only one component of it. Anyone- vehicle, pedestrian, or biker- has a role to play, Mr Shanmugam said.

He emphasized the need to foster a society where drivers stay alert and cautious while driving safely.

The police may continue to ramp up enforcement, including regular barriers at different places, he added.
