Heavy snow in Japan disrupts holiday air traffic

Tokyo: Millions of families were returning home on Tuesday ( Dec 31 ) as a result of heavy snowfall in Japan’s northern region, which caused dozens of cancellations.

Japan Airlines said it scrapped 42 airlines, affecting 6, 398 individuals, by first day, all of them services to and from the northern island of Hokkaido.

Its main competitor ANA even cancelled 14 planes, affecting 800 travellers, due to the harsh conditions in the northern, and warned its clients of conceivable delays and more cancellations.

At the major airports of Hokkaido, people formed long ranges to secure other flights.

Powerful winds and heavy snow were reported on Tuesday in Hokkaido and communities along north shores facing the Sea of Japan, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The climate agency reported that in some Hokkaidoan regions since Monday, more than 20 cm of snow have fallen, most of it on Tuesday night, adding that rain was forecast to remain on New Year’s Day.

As extreme heatwaves caused by climate change swept the world’s regions, making this year’s summer the mutual hottest on record, equaling the high of 2023.

According to the national climate firm, this was the best season since records began 126 decades ago.

The famed Mount Fuji snowcap didn’t show up until the first week of November, compared to the typical beginning October one, for the longest time this year.
