According to the NMC, Typhoon Koinu was moving at 144 kilometers per hour off the beach of Shanwei in southwestern Guangdong as of 8 a.m. on Friday.
According to the forecast, the storms will weaken into a powerful tropical storm starting on Friday and getting weaker as it moves north along China’s southern coast.
Although no one was hurt on the island, Typhoon Koinu caused the most extensive destruction on distant Orchid Island off Taiwan’s west beach and home to about 5, 000 people. It also killed one person and injured nearly 400 people in Taiwan.
In one of the island’s harbors, more than 70 boats capsized or sank, and the tornado severely damaged two schools and cut off electricity. On Friday, engineers were being flown in by an air pressure plane to restore power.
