A resident and local media reported on Tuesday ( Sep 10 ) that more rain is forecast for the Myanmar town of Tachileik and that it has caused flooding that has knocked out power and telephone lines.
AFP photos of the city, which borders Thailand and shares a border with Thailand, show residents attempting to rescue flooded businesses and homes from flooded streets while riding motorcycles through red-brown waters.
” Many people are stuck, and my friends are stuck at their offices, and I ca n’t leave,” Tachileik resident Phoo Phoo, 26, told AFP by phone.
Telephone and light ranges in the city, home to at least 60, 000 people, were over, she said.
” Some homes are already under liquid. Scooters and ground floors are also submerged.
Citizens were seen sitting on their ceiling as the waters passed beneath them, according to images shared on social media.
Waters were robbing the roads in the northern Thai city of Mae Sai just over the border, according to pictures from nearby Thai media.
More big to really heavy rain was expected in the northern on Wednesday, according to Thailand’s weather office.
Last year, at least 20 people went missing when the ship they were travelling in along the Mekong river, around 20km from Tachileik, met with a disaster, local officials said.
Southeast Asia’s country usually experiences months of heavy downpours during the rainy season, but according to scientists, man-made culture change is making weather patterns even worse.
