Hardeep Singh Nijjar: Canada police to give update on killing of Sikh activist – BBC News

In the state of Punjab, in northern India, Hardeep Singh Nijjar was born in the city of Jalandhar.

In 1997, he moved to Canada where he married, became a member, had two brothers and worked as a locksmith.

Nijjar vehemently pushed for the establishment of Khalistan, an independent nation for the Sikhs, a majority in India.

Last June, he was shot and killed by two militants outside a Sikh temple in Vancouver’s cities.

He had been labelled a criminal by India, and accused of being the “mastermind” of the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), a banned radical party in the country.

These assertions, according to Nijjar’s supporters and friends, are false and that he has previously been threatened because of his engagement.
