To facilitate the development of these northern regions ‘ commerce, the government on Tuesday approved a 300 million baht money burst for 13 tasks to be implemented in Phayao, Chiang Rai, Phrae, and Nan.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who was on a two-day trip to the top North, presided over the government quality at a smart meeting held in Phayao.

The PM even visited the site of Phayao’s proposed new airports during his Monday and Tuesday visits.

While in the area, the cabinet also approved a proposal to establish a new Tourism Authority of Thailand ( TAT ) office in Phayao by the end of this year as part of a strategy to transform it into the North’s new main tourist destination.

Of the 13 development initiatives approved, nine were proposed by local authorities operational systems, and the other four by the private sector in the middle North, according to Danucha Pichayanan, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Council.

The nine jobs are for 155 million rmb, while the other four tasks are collectively worth 145.88 million baht, said Mr Danucha.

The nine projects include a capacity-building project aimed at promoting innovation in the region’s tea and coffee production as part of its tourism promotion, a project aimed at improving Nan’s agricultural products, a project to improve Nan’s tourism quality, a project to aid Nan to work toward putting its ancient towns on the map of innovative World Heritage sites, a project to promote the healthy agricultural practice in Nan’s coffee bean production, and a project to improve agricultural production in Phrae.

Thapanee Kiatphaibool, governor of the TAT, said that the value of these projects ranges from 5 to 26 million baht each.

The private sector, meanwhile, has put forward plans to develop a section of Highway No. 1202 in the Pa Daet district of Chiang Rai ( 50 million baht ), boost tourist safety in Chiang Rai ( 50 million baht ), develop a road in Phayao ( 25.88 million baht ), and fight PM2.5 dust pollution in the upper North ( 20 million baht ).

In related news, the cabinet also approved a request for additional 6.75 billion baht in funding to construct a new motorway between Bang Pa-in and Nakhon Ratchasima.
