The government continues to lead the effort to legalize online gambling, with the policy anticipated to be finalized in a month.
Digital Economy and Society (DES) MinisterPrasert Jantararuangtongon Tuesday said the cabinet approved in principle a proposal from the DES regarding a legal framework to manage online gambling-related issues on Monday.
Before attempting to amend any big laws, which may require the parliament’s approval, the proposal includes amending the extra laws created by ministers.
He predicted that the DES, the Ministry of Interior, and the Council of State will work together to amend the intermediate law, which may take about a month.
” The goal is to control underwater playing operations, bringing them into the legal foundation and ensuring correct taxation”, he said.
According to Mr. Prasert, the Interior Ministry and DES have been talking about the issues for months as it is the government’s scheme to legalize underwater businesses to increase state revenue.
He added that Thais are very interested in playing football online, and that this will also be taken into account in addition to other forms of gambling, such as cockfighting or online gambling.
When asked whether three organizations may suffice, Mr. Prasert said additional ones could be added if needed.
When approved, each agency may deal with its functions, including conducting people hearings.
Regarding the reason the government made a decision on such a crucial issue that was not officially announced by the government or any ministers, Mr. Prasert claimed that the subject had been momentarily discussed during the cupboard meeting on Monday.
However, public interest was more focused on the commission’s acceptance of the director of the Entertainment Complex Bill, he said. Thaksin made the announcement last week while running for the Provincial Administrative Organization’s key election in Chiang Rai.
When asked whether the state or the private sector may regulate online wagering, Mr. Prasert claimed that this had not yet been decided and that it would depend on the specifics of the secondary laws.
