GE2025: SPP to field party treasurer Williiamson Lee in Potong Pasir SMC

SINGAPORE: The Singapore People’s Party ( SPP ) will field treasurer Williiamson Lee  in Potong Pasir SMC at the approaching General Election, setting up a good three-cornered battle in the former opposition enclave.

SPP secretary-general Steve Chia made the announcement in a media statement on Tuesday ( Apr 22 ).

He said Mr Lee, 46, has been” a staunch part of our group for nearly two decades”, and is no stranger to the campaign road.

Mr Lee had contested in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC in the 2020 surveys, garnering 32. 77 per cent of the vote against the People’s Action Party ( PAP ) team.

” His practice, commitment, and profound knowledge of the problems that subject to Singaporeans produce him an excellent choice to symbolize Potong Pasir,” said Mr Chia.

” He has spent decades walking the floor, listening to people, and lending a helping hands where it ’s needed most. “

Mr Lee will likely be upward against PAP’s Alex Yeo, 46, who will exchange former MP Sitoh Yih Pin, in Potong Pasir.

Mr Yeo, a solicitor, stood for vote in Aljunied GRC at the 2020 elections, has expertise in both legal process and community engagement. He was formerly the tree president of PAP’s Paya Lebar section.

Mr Sitoh, 61, is stepping down after serving three conditions since 2011. His win that season ended the opposition’s 27-year hang on the electorate. Former SPP key Chiam See Tong left Potong Pasir that year to challenge Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC.

Mr Chiam, who turned 90 past fortnight, stepped down from his command post at the group in 2019, handing the reins to Mr Chia.

A three-cornered fight is expected in Potong Pasir SMC, with People’s Alliance for Reform ( PAR ) also indicating that it could contest there.

Mr Chia said next month he hoped to avoid a three-way challenge in Potong Pasir and may reach out to PAR secretary-general Lim Tean to communicate.

But, Mr Lim announced next Friday that PAR did area 14 individuals at seven divisions, including Potong Pasir SMC.

In the 2020 election, SPP’s Jose Raymond attained 39. 33 per share of the ballot in Potong Pasir, losing to Mr Sitoh.

Since next, two counties from Potong Pasir SMC were moved to Marine Parade GRC in this year’s Electoral Boundaries Review Committee statement. This modification came in response to rapid population growth from new advances in Bidadari.

As of Feb 1, the district has 30,897 registered voters, away from 19,731 in 2020.
