Chee Soon Juan, the head of the Singapore Democratic Party, announced on Sunday ( Mar 23 ) that he would participate in the upcoming General Election for the new Sembawang West Single Member Constituency ( SMC).
Dr. Chee said he would have to keep Bukit Batok, where he had contested the 2016 by-election and the 2020 general election, during a haywire in Woodlands.
Dr. Chee added that Professor Paul Tambyah, the group’s chair, may contest a second time in Bukit Panjang SMC, where he participated in the 2020 General Election.
That means I have to abandon Bukit Batok, and I do it with a big heart. You don’t spend ten years getting to know the people, establishing the area, leading the inhabitants ‘ lives it, and then having it taken from you with the injury of a pencil, without feeling that void,” said Dr. Chee.
SDP’s disclosures on Sunday follow the launch of the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee’s record on March 11, which saw significant changes to Singapore’s political map.
Sembawang West is one of the six newly established SMCs. It will have 24, 153 citizens.
The new Jurong East-Bukit Batok Group Representation Constituency ( GRC ) includes the SDP and Yuhua and Bukit Batok SMCs, which were contested in the 2020 General Election.
The group also contested in Bukit Panjang SMC and two additional GRCs in 2020, including Marsiling-Yew Tee and Holland-Bukit Timah, but lost none of the seats in parliament.  ,
SDP stated that it intends to run in Sembawang GRC  in the upcoming General Election in the same district it ran in both the 2006 and 2011 votes.  ,
