GE2025: Singapore Democratic Party calls on government to do more about ‘mental health crisis’

Singapore is currently dealing with a “mental health crisis,” according to Singapore Democratic Party ( SDP ) chair Chee Soon Juan on Sunday ( Apr 27 ).

Dr. Chee cited Singapore’s poor mental health in his speech at a rally outside Sun Plaza on Sunday nights.

He demanded that Sembawang Group Representation Constituency ( GRC ) anchor minister Ong Ye Kung and health minister Ong Ye Kung do more to address the crisis.

” An increasing the support system for Singaporeans is useless without addressing the root causes of the problem. Do you not turn the tap off second when mopping the floor? he inquired.

Nine candidates took to the stage at the march near Sun Plaza in Sembawang GRC, where SDP vice-chairman Bryan Lim, Ms Surayah Akbar, Dr. James Gomez, Mr. Damanhuri Abas, and Mr. Alfred Tan are all running.

They square off against the National Solidarity Party slate led by secretary-general Spencer Ng and the People’s Action Party ( PAP ) team led by Mr. Ong.

SDP’s Sembawang area plan, which includes co-working spaces and storage spaces in space decks for residents, was unveiled during the rally on Saturday.

One of Dr. Chee’s most significant proposals, which includes drop-in counseling, peer support groups, mental health, education, and innovative workshops to improve endurance, was made on Sunday.

He added that more “green available spaces” should be created for Sembawang residents, particularly for young people and the old, as this has been shown to benefit mental health.

According to a study conducted by the Institute of Mental Health last year, about one in three Singaporean teenagers aged 15 to 35 reported having significant or really intense depression, anxiety, or stress.
