
SINGAPORE: After more than three decades in elections, Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean is retiring.
He was seen with the People’s Action Party’s ( PAP ) potential team for Punggol GRC on Wednesday morning ( Apr 23 ), as it worked to prepare for its nomination papers, but his name was in the end not submitted for any contests.
Mr. Teo thanked them for their compassion, compassion, and support in a Facebook post addressed to Pasir Ris and Punggol inhabitants.
I resign as your Member of Parliament knowing that we have strong, capable team that will continue to support you, he continued.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong described Mr. Teo as a seasoned and admired veteran who had left” a profound impression across all the departments he served in.”
Prior to joining the then-ministries of the atmosphere, education, defense, and home affairs, Mr. Teo served as the coordinating minister for national protection.
He provided wise guidance and support for me and many others in the Cabinet, and he was a mentor to me. He brought a sharp perspective to complicated issues and a strong emphasis on making a difference, Mr. Wong wrote on Instagram. He was a planner at heart.
He continued, stating that Mr. Teo distinguished Singapore by bringing together opportunities and place for the nation on the international stage.
His efforts over the years have helped us resolve complicated and enduring diplomatic disputes, including the Singapore-Indian agreement on extradition, airspace, and defense cooperation. His direction has made it possible for our little red dot to walk tall and proud in the world, Mr. Wong said.
