GE2025: DPM Heng Swee Keat retires after 15 years in politics, says it has been a ‘great honour’

Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat announced on Wednesday ( Apr 23 ) that he will be retiring from politics ahead of the 2025 General Election.

On Nomination Day, he announced his decision on Facebook, where he was spotted posing for the East Coast Governor’s Party ( PAP ) candidate’s entrance to the Yusof Ishak Secondary School.

” It has been a great honor for me to offer you as a Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister for about 15 times,” said Mr. Heng. &nbsp,

Mr. Edwin Tong, the minister for tradition, community, and youth, Mr. Tan Kiat How, the senior minister of state, Ms. Jessica Tan, and Mr. Dinesh Vasu Dash, the newcomers, are the affirmed East Coast candidates for the PAP.

” I’ve decided not to run in the forthcoming election this year because I think it’s the right time to make room for a new team of competent individuals who are well-suited to provide Singapore.”

Mr. Heng has spent more than a decade in the Singapore Police Force and another 15 years in the Administrative Service. He has been in the public support for 45 times.

In a memorial posted on Instagram, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong described Mr. Heng and Dr. Ng Eng Hen as “giants” and “remarkable people” who had dedicated their whole careers to open service.

Mr. Wong claimed that he and Mr. Heng both had entered politics at the same time, and that he saw him as” a steadfast friend, friend, and top” who was always giving in to others ‘ needs.

He “masters every scheme information,” added Mr. Wong, and believes that our nation is stronger when Singaporeans are more actively engaged in shaping our shared potential. &nbsp,

He attributed Mr. Heng’s extensive commitments and “willingness to listen to different ideas,” particularly when he served as the prime minister’s representative for the president’s Forward Singapore practice. &nbsp,

Mr. Wong remarked that both men dedicated themselves to serving Singapore and distinguished themselves, noting that even though management is a group work,” the members in the group make a difference.”

Without Swee Keat and Chee Hean, Singapore would not have been able to achieve its full potential.

Both men could have continued serving in the community, according to Mr. Wong, who added that they had chosen to step aside to allow for command renewal. &nbsp,

” If I am able to take Singapore forward from here, it is because of officials like them who worked hard to place such solid and lasting underpinnings.”
