
In the newly constructed Tampines Changkat single-seat ward for the upcoming General Election, the People’s Action Party ( PAP ) will field labor unionist Desmond Choo.
Mr. Choo, 46, was an ex-Tampines GRC MP before taking over the Tampines Changkat department. Additionally, he serves as the Mayor of the North East District.
He also serves as the National Trades Union Congress’s policy producer and associate secretary-general.
The announcement was made on Wednesday ( 16 April ) at a press conference introducing the PAP’s candidates for Tampines Changkat SMC and Tampines GRC.
At the occasion, which took place in a multi-purpose house in Tampines Street 62, Mr. Choo said,” I’ve had the honor of serving our Changkat people for more than a decade. Not just as a Member of Parliament, but as their activist and friend.”
” Changkat has always been more than just a constituency,” I thought. It is our home, he continued, adding that we have created a loving, adaptable community there.  ,
He assured people that Tampines Changkat SMC and Tampines GRC will continue to work together and work on sources.  ,
He said,” I think my service to Tampines Changkat is about trust, and trust is earned door to door, day by day,” adding that he intends to push for fairer pay for working families ‘ childcare.
In the most recent Electoral Boundaries Review, there have been six innovative single-seat units created, Tampines Changkat SMC. The district was carved out of Tampines GRC, which had seen considerable population growth as a result of recent demographic shifts and new housing developments. The district has 23, 802 authorized citizens.  ,
Parts of Tampines West, which was originally governed by Aljunied GRC, were also incorporated into the now-present 147, 904-voter Tampines GRC.
An opposition issue is frequently anticipated, even though it is not known who Mr. Choo will experience in the contest. Since the 2015 General Election, all political tickets have been contested.
Mr. Choo made his political debut in Hougang SMC in 2011 under the PAP symbol, but he lost to Yaw Shin Leong of the Workers ‘ Party with 35.2 % of the vote. Following Mr. Yaw’s ejection from the WP, he ran for re-election in 2012, winning 37.92 percent of the voting.
Following Tuesday’s abdication of congress by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, voters may turn out for the election on May 3.
