Former Singapore transport minister S Iswaran in the spotlight as unprecedented criminal trial opens on Tuesday

After weeks of difficulties and court applications, the prosecution will start.

Iswaran had already pleaded not guilty on the day he was first charged in January, which was unusual because accused people do not typically report their requests this soon. He had already done so from the beginning.

Since January, his attorneys have been performing several judge maneuvers.

Among them are his powerful request to leave the country for Australia to support his son settle into school, his interrupted return as a result of a ill health, and numerous attempts to have the prosecution turn over all of its witness statements.

WHAT ISWARAN ABOUT THE CASE HAS SAID

Iswaran said in a statement to the media following his January arrest that he was stupid and would now concentrate on removing my name.

Iswaran, whose political career spanned almost 30 years, resigned from his government jobs two days before his first court appearance in January. &nbsp,

He had previously been given a leave of absence while the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau ( CPIB ) conducted investigations.

He claimed he had written his resignation notice to Lee Hsien Loong, the then-prime secretary, “even without getting asked to do so.”

Because I think it was the right thing to do, I resigned as a member of the Women’s Action Party, a member of the Cabinet, and as a member of Parliament.

I more informed the prime minister on Wednesday that, despite my apparent innocence, I will be returning all funds received as compensation for my time as a Minister and for my expenses as a Member of Parliament at the time the CPIB’s studies begin in July 2023.

He was receiving a reduced regular income of S$ 8,500 and a whole MP annual income of S$ 192, 500.

Heavyweight attorney Mr. Singh claimed in a May court hearing that Iswaran did not know or believe that Mr. Ong and Mr. Lum’s gifts were “veiled pleasure” in a glance at his potential defense.

” He was dealing with very, very dear and near buddies”, said Mr Singh. He said,” His state of mind at the time was that he had no idea that there were donations being given as veiled pleasure, and that he had no thought at all that they were it.”
