Former Malaysia PM Muhyiddin charged with sedition over alleged remarks on royalty, lawyer says

Malaysia’s opposition leader and former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin is facing sedition charges for allegedly insulting the nation’s former king, according to his lawyer on Tuesday ( Aug 27 ).

Malaysia’s king is generally royal, and it is held in high regard. A colonial-era Insurrection Act allows for inappropriate remarks about aristocracy to be brought to justice.

Malaysia’s authorities confirmed on Monday that the&nbsp, Attorney General’s Chambers had ordered Muhyiddin to be charged with sedition.

Muhyiddin was questioned last week by police&nbsp, for presumably questioning the position of Malaysia’s monarch in the formation of the government following the government’s November 2022 general election. &nbsp,

In a statement reportedly given on August 15 at Felda Perasu in preparation for a state congressional by-election in Kelantan, he reportedly did it. &nbsp, A picture of the statement has since gone popular.

Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, who ruled the Pahang region at the time, resigned as king earlier this year as part of Malaysia’s special circular monarchy program. &nbsp,

Muhyiddin, who is currently the leader of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia ( Bersatu), was the nation’s seventh prime minister and served as its leader from March 2020 to August 2021.
