JAKARTA: Thirteen people were killed and two injured in Indonesia’s North Maluku province on Sunday ( Aug 25 ) after floods in the east of the sprawling archipelago, authorities said.
The country’s disaster management firm BNPB said the storms, caused by heavy rainfall since Saturday, also seriously damaged 10 homes in Ternate town.
Local residents were advised by BNPB to be on guard because of forecasts that heavy rainfall may persist in the next few days.
” We urge people to keep watchful and follow instructions from the government on any potential floods,” said director Abdul Muhari in a statement.
A team was dispatched by BNPB to assist with the patients ‘ evacuation, according to BNPB. Basarnas, a search and rescue organization, added that efforts to move patients, who were hacked by floods and dirt swept along by floodwaters, were still being made.
In May, display floods and landslides in Indonesia’s West Sumatra state killed more than 60 individuals.
