Flooding in Thailand maroons thousands in northern province

Bangkok: Following flooding that has ruined thousands of lives and is attempting to reach them with boats and helicopters, Thailand deployed military special forces in the northern province of Chiang Rai on Thursday ( Sep 12 ).

According to the authorities, at least 33 people have died in Thailand since mid-August as a result of a string of rain-related incidents, including floods. Nine have died this week in two north provinces, which have been affected by Typhoon Yagi’s severe weather.

At least 197 people have died in Vietnam as a result of the strongest storm to strike Asia this year, Yagi, which made land on Saturday and flooded pieces of Hanoi’s capital city.

In Thailand’s northern territory of Chiang Rai, flood waters had started receding from some sections of the hard-hit Mai Sai region, but some river towns were also flooded, said the mind of the city, Narongpol Kid-an.

” We are rushing to send out persons trapped inside their homes”, he told Reuters. There are still hundreds of people who require rescue.

Local officials were using ships and planes, with support from Thai Navy SEAL special causes, to perform rescue procedures, he said.

” The condition is quite delicate”, Narongpol said. ” When it rains, the waters rises quite fast”.
