TRAT: Five schools in Khao Saming district have suspended classes with the flooding in many communities showing no sign of easing on Tuesday and students unable to leave their waterlogged homes.
Khao Saming canal has overflowed, soaking the surrounding area in water 80-120cm deep.
About 100 houses in Khao Saming and Tha Krathon communities were surrounded by floodwater, with residents trapped in their homes.
Municipal officials, police and rescue workers continued distributing food packages on Tuesday after flash floods were triggered by torrential rain about 5am on Monday.
Five schools in Khao Saming district were confirmed to have suspended classes on Tuesday.
The provincial meteorological office reported that 3,086.1 millimetres of rain had fallen on Trat from Jan 1 to July 28, the highest in 32 years. The seven-month average was 2,635.8 millimetres.
Runoff on Tuesday flowed into Tha Pradu canal in tambon Wa Krajae and Huai Raeng in Khao Saming district, flooding the road between Wat Lamphurai and Wat Tha Pradu. At least two shrimp farms were flooded.
Rescuers were handing out food and other relief goods to affected residents and helping them move their belongings to higher ground.
