Duterte’s future in balance as Philippine election season kicks off

MANILA: On Tuesday ( Feb 11 ), mid-term elections in the Philippines kicked off the campaign trail and would decide the political fate of impeached vice president Sara Duterte.

Candidate candidates for a few open Senate seats include talk show hosts, film stars, and a priest who is facing sex-trafficking costs.

While the May 12 voting will pack more than 18, 000 posts global, it is the would-be senators who are facing a work some bargained for – serving as jurists in the impeachment trial of former president Rodrigo Duterte’s eldest daughter.

The vice president, whose alliance with President Ferdinand Marcos has imploded brilliantly, was impeached by the House of Representatives last week on charges of “violation of the law, betrayal of people believe, graft and corruption, and another great crimes”.

Seize the 16 votes needed to pass a faith in the 24-seat Senate, including a national work she claims to be really considering, to a conviction that would remove Duterte from office.

” The composition of the next Senate may be important” to the court’s results, Dennis Coronacion, mind of the social science section of Manila’s University of Santo Tomas, told AFP.

The Duterte party issued a statement last week urging citizens to” decide correctly who they will vote for, especially in the Senate, where the death of VP Sara will become decided.”

That information resonated with Gina Tamayo, a 43-year-old fruits merchant, who told AFP she did not aid a candidate who may vote to oust Duterte.

” I don’t think the allegations against her”, Tamayo said.

But Charity Vargas, 39, said her ballot would not be influenced by the prosecution problem.

” I know who I really vote for, those who have already demonstrated their integrity and integrity.”
