Three regions in the North and Northeast will have opioid drug control centers, according to government spokesman Chai Wacharonke on Tuesday.
According to him, the program is in line with the latest government’s decision to develop additional initiatives to support comprehensive drug suppression, with results anticipated within a year.
To increase efficiency in terms of cooperation and knowledge discussing among organizations involved in the fight against drugs, Mr. Chai announced the establishment of command centers in four regions in Nakhon Phanom and 11 districts of Chiang Mai.
Because of their proximity to the main transportation pathways used by smuggling gangs to bring meth and other illegal medicines, the three provinces were selected.
At least 80 % of seized drugs, which were primarily produced along the Myanmar-Thailand-Laos borders or the so-called Golden Triangle, came from the north regions before 2022, according to a Ministry of Justice report.
Drug traffickers moved an estimated 45 % of their exports to the northern region as repression efforts in those areas grew more severe.
Drug seizures have increased as a result of police work on the route. According to the review, 500 million tablets have been seized so far this year, up from about 70 million in 2003.
According to Mr. Chai, the Royal Thai Police estimate that at least 600,000 people in the nation are dependent on illegal drugs, with 30 000 of them developing emotional illnesses as a result.
The news of the new order centers came after three members of a drug gang were detained the previous day in Chiang Mai’s Muang district, where 5 million pills had been seized.
