The Meteorological Department is urging people to refrain from spreading false information about Thailand’s 24 winds, noting that giving false information could result in five years in prison.
The office stated in a Facebook post that there has been a widespread transmission of unauthorised individuals ‘ false weather warnings online.
It said that spreading misleading, false or fraudulent data, as well as fabricated information, violates Section 14 of the Computer Crime Act. Sanctions include up to five years and captivity and/or a fine of up to 100, 000 baht.
Wetang Phuangsup, assistant permanent secretary for the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, reported that there have recently been a number of false news reports about natural disasters, with one claiming that Thailand will experience 24 storms this time.
