Authorities in Guangzhou, a city in southern China, are raising the alarm over a rise in home dengue fever cases, urging residents to be on the lookout and help stop the mosquito-borne illness unfold.
According to the Guangzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention in an Oct. 16 report, dengue cases increased by 73 % last week compared to the 252 cases reported the week before. Of the 437 mosquito situations recorded, 360 were nearby residents and the rest imported.  ,
Cases have been reported in all 11 towns of Guangzhou, which has a total population of more than 17 million. While no dengue-related fatalities have been reported so far in the area, the condition can be dangerous and cause to long-term health problems, as doctors and medical specialists often note.  ,
Over the past two weeks, dengue cases have increased steadily throughout the greater Guangdong province. Between Sep 30 and Oct 6, 1, 770 circumstances were recorded- an boost of 500 compared to all of August, authorities said.  ,
Chinese Internet users are concerned about the disease surge, some describing Guangdong province’s epicenter as the city’s epicenter.
